Handmade Cards: French Door

Welcome to Urban DIYs! Today's post will be the first in a series of DIY Handmade Cards. As a college student I am always looking for ways to save money. During the holiday season, gifts and greeting cards can add up. A handmade card can make all the difference! It is not only less expensive but also more personalized than a standard drugstore greeting card! Keep reading to learn how to make a simple french door card...

Supplies:
  • 1 piece of cardstock
  • 1 piece of paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil or paperclip
  • Glue or some adhesive
Steps:

1. Take your paper and cut two equal flaps (doors). Side A is 4.5", Sides B and C are 2.25" and Sides D and E are 3.25".

2. Cut a piece of cardstock that is 4.5" x 9".

3. Use the piece you just cut and place it horizontally in front of you. Measure 2.25" from each end and use a rounded side of a paperclip to "score" the card or use a pencil to mark a light line.

4. Fold each side toward the center so the ends just meet. If your sides overlap, cut a thin strip off each side. If they do not meet, do not worry, it is better than trying to re-fold them. You do not want any unnecessary folds or creases.

5. Use glue or some sort of adhesive on on flap and then glue one of the pieces of paper so the edge touches the folded line.

6. Close the card and fold back the triangular part of the paper.

7. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the other side.

8. Personalize this card by writing a special note and you are ready to give it to a loved one!

I hope you enjoyed making this new take on a traditional card. The shape of this card makes it easy to display on a table or mantlepiece! To take this card to the next level, try using a solid colored cardstock and printed paper!

Note: If you want to make more than one card, make yourself a template of the flaps (described in Step 1) using cardstock.

Please excuse my photo skills, I am still learning!
